Except Sherlock and John meet in Persia, where John is a soldier being held captive and soon to be put to death. Sherlock has been an ‘entertainer’ for the Shah and the Khanum (if orchestrating extravagant killings is entertainment) of Persia, but they are growing tired of him and his endless superiority, and Sherlock knows they will soon attempt to kill him. Somehow, John and Sherlock end up meeting and Sherlock helps him escape under the promise that he will get safe passage into France, where a long-dead artist and relative of his had left money on which Sherlock could survive. John ends up tagging along for far longer than is expected.

Also, Irene Adler is totally a contralto at the opera house that Sherlock decides to haunt!!!1
