Okay so this dates back to the edo period, which all in all was a period of rampant sexuality to the point where the government were like okay y’all need to stop fucking now.
A 矢場 (やば / yaba) is a gaming facility where you’d shoot paper targets with miniature bows and arrows. You’d try to hit the bullseye and win prizes! There would be like snacks, sake, and tea. It was just a great day out tbh.
However back in the Edo period they were often the front of cheap brothels. A 矢場女 (やば・おんな / yaba onna) was a female sex worker at one of these brothels.
