Just casually bringing this back. I really love protective Sherlock… kind of a lot.
Just a friendly heads-up for anyone who’s interested: This Sherlock shirt just went up on Teefury, and it’ll be available for the next 24 hours, so until Midnight EST Wednesday.
To be honest, I’m disheartened by the fact the “Sherlock Fandom” has come to only encompass the BBC series.
When I see all these fans despairing over not getting any new episodes and referring to this mass as âThe Sherlock Fandomâ, I keep thinking to myself how⌠partitioned the two sides of the fandoms have become. It shouldnât be like that.
Youâre all Sherlock Holmes fans, through and through! Our fandom has been around for over one hundred years, and more than anything, this is a wonderful time to look through the other adaptions that have been created during that time and read the books so you can sink your teeth into more of the duo that you grew to love.
The fact is, I see a lot of fans ignoring the other adaptions and treating the BBC series as the only one that âmattersâ. And thatâs a shame, because part of what makes Sherlock Holmes unique is how him and his fellow characters have been adapted in so many different ways over the years, each time the relationships being recreated according to the era and country it was made in.
So to see people treat one series as gospel and ignore the others⌠for me, that is saddening. We are one fandom, people, and each adaption – be it BBC or Granada or Lenfilm – have brought something to the table for us to love. There is no Sherlock Fandom, there is no Holmes fandom, there is only the Sherlock Holmes fandom and weâre all in this together.
This. It sucks, really. I just want everyone to get along, maaan. People can have their favourite adaptation, thatâs fine, but theyâre truly missing out on the other fantastic adaptations by not being open-minded.
Well, itâs their loss if they donât want to branch out.Â
I have been, and always will be, a Sherlock Holmes fan – ACD to BBC and many stops in between. Full Stop.
I honestly feel sad for the people who can’t or don’t appreciate the greater works; because there’s just so MUCH to be enjoyed. As I’ve mentioned once before – this fandom (the greater Sherlock Holmes fandom including, rather than just BBC) can create a rather staggering library all it’s own; the works of which I’ve been slowly collecting and enjoying for ages. I’ve always loved the Sherlock character, even before I’d gotten into the canon, knew what the canon even was, just the sort of pop-culture understanding that ‘everyone’ knows and the cartoons that played on it; I was drawn to it even then. Then I saw a few adaptations – some better than others, but none that put me off – I started in on the books then, first the solid canon, then the annotated, then a few of the ‘newer’ Holmes stories (7 per cent solution, anyone? That was my first non ACD). Then radio drama’s; Rathbone and later Merrison, and the various audiobook readings and Granada which I ADORE even over the Rathbone era which I had thought my favorite once until I learned what an amazing character Watson could be, and god, Brett, how did he manage to BECOME Holmes like that? I could forgive the dodgy action scenes because the rest was so magnificent – and I have the Russian series waiting in the rotation, but I have such high expectations for it with all I’ve heard, and the Great Mouse Detective, which I bought later in a fit of nostalgia and don’t even care because it’s amazingly accurate for a cartoon adaptation about a mouse, and even the RDJ movies, because ya, they’re basically big, shiny, explody fanfiction, but they’re FUN, and this fandom is so ALIVE after all this time, and give me ALL of it.
And ok, ok, I’m rambling, but I just have FEELINGS about my fandom, ok? I’ll shut up now. Maybe go read some fanfiction to walk it off. (But I’m not gonna lie – I still want season three like burning. XD)
