You know, another thing (among the many things including rampant sexism and shades of Fake Geek Girl) that pisses me off so much about the CN “we don’t want girls” debacle over Young Justice is that there’s some sort of thought that only boys buy toys, therefore girls aren’t a valuable demographic.
Here’s the thing, executives. 8yo boys don’t buy shit. Neither do girls. You know who does?
Their parents. Most especially when those parents are also big geeks, and are invested in the show too.
I spent hours watching Justice League and Wonder Woman as a kid. Batman: TAS and Batman Beyond and Teen Titans, etc in college. I’ve been looking for more shows like it. Like Young Justice. And you had us. YOU HAD US. An entire demographic of adult nerds with jobs and kids and ready to get our kids into the same awesome shit we love, and you blew it.
You had 30+ years of me watching your shows to figure this out. I’m a 37yo mother of an 8yo fannish-leaning boy. He’s right there. Ready to become that coveted toy-buying demographic you love so much.
But you know what? My kid likes the same things I like. We have our differences, sure. My and my husband’s enthusiasm for a particular fandom only boosts his. But I will say this: any nerd fandom I’m not welcome in? That feels hostile toward women? Chances are I’m going to be steering him well away from it.
Me and all my money.
Clear enough?
